Why Do Some Players Fall Apart When It Matters Most?
And why do others stay cool, locked in, and lethal under pressure?
A few seasons ago, I was working with a flanker who was all grit and fire.
In training, he was a machine across the park, dominant at the breakdown, sharp in his reads, and leading from the front.
But in some matches, something strange would happen.
The minute pressure hit, the scoreboard tightened, or he made a mistake, he’d unravel or go into his shell somewhat and try to do too much on his own.
You'd see it happen in real time:
A knock-on at the ruck…
Then a sloppy tackle…
Then yelling at teammates…
Then going completely quiet.
Then doing too much, or nothing at all.
Before long, he wasn’t just off his game; he was a liability.
His body was fine.
His skills were solid.
It was his mind that went missing.
But, this is actually very common...
It's not just him.
Every team has those few players who often fold when it matters.
Or worse, those moments that cost teams games.
That’s why I've taught and now built the Mental Reset System (MRS).
So your brain doesn’t hijack your performance when it counts.
The MRS is a simple but powerful system that helps athletes:
Regain control fast when emotions spike
Stop spiralling after mistakes
Perform better in real-time under pressure
And build solid confidence over time
However, here's...
What It Is (And What It’s Not)
It’s not motivational quotes.
It’s not another mental skills checklist.
It’s not (just) theory.
This is a practical, repeatable, in-the-moment system for instantly shifting your mental state when the game is on the line.
That means you get to use it in real-time while training or competing.
And because no performance plan is complete without reflection...
You also get the MRS Digital Post-Game Review Tool, a quick-use tool that shows you:
Where you held it together mentally
Where you lost control
And what to do next week to improve
I used to sit with athletes after games and review their mental performance in crucial, high-pressure moments, but that took a while.
This tool speeds things up and gets us to the meat and potatoes much quicker.
You want to spend your time training and improving, not just reviewing past performances forever, especially since you do a lot of that as professional athletes.
What Makes This Different?
Most players review their physical game; they must, since coaches require it.
But, in my experience, few review their mental game, especially under pressure.
Many want to, but they just don't know how or what to review.
This system can change that.
It’s been shaped by:
Over a decade working with competitive rugby players
Real mistakes, real pressure, real recovery
Proven psychological principles, without the jargon
So,
If you’ve ever said:
“I need to get my head right for the next game,” then this is your system.

No fluff. No hype. Just a tool that works.
Train your mind like you train your body because pressure doesn’t go away.
But how you respond to it… can change everything.
